The sixth annual Chief John F. Skroski Memorial Wiffle Ball Tournament is scheduled for May 12 in Whately.

The 3 versus 3 tournament, held in honor of former Deerfield and Southampton Police Chief John Skroski, costs $20 per player (lunch included). All money raised goes toward the Chief John F Skroski Scholarship Fund for graduating student athletes at Frontier Regional School and Hampshire Regional High School.

The tournament will once again include trophies, prizes and music. Last year, 32 teams from four different states competed. To register, call or text Chris at 413-265-1668.

Volleyball

Pioneer Valley Juniors take silver

A pair of Pioneer Valley Juniors volleyball teams picked up silver medals over the weekend.

The PV 16’s Fighting Fuchsia captured a silver medal Sunday in Windsor, Conn. After qualifying for the playoffs in pool play, the squad defeated the Springfield Rebels, 2-1, in the semifinals. Rebounding from a 25-19 Set 1 loss, the team won the next two sets in extras points, 27-27 and 17-15.

Fuchsia lost a one-set final to Northwest YMCA, 25-18.

Local players on the roster include Charlotte Doulette, Alexandra Forte, Ashley Gochinski, Maya LaClaire, Jordan Machowski, Ava Machowski, Morgan Martineau, Lannashia Ngu, Tricia Sittauer and Brandi Stetson.

The PV 18’s Pistols also took a silver medal in its tournament in Bristol, Conn. over the weekend.

Finishing tied for second place in pool play, the Pistols had to play a 15-point tiebreaker set to advance to the playoffs. Down 8-1, Pioneer Valley mounted a comeback to capture a 17-15 victory. The team won a semifinal match, 2-1, before falling in a one-set final, 25-21.

Local athletes on the Pistols include Georgia Quesnelle, Elizabeth Fuqua, Marissa Courchesne, Amanda Crowe-Chandler.

Youth baseball

FC Babe Ruth signups

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League has three registration sessions scheduled at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield this week.

League officials will be at Abercrombie tonight and Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and again on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The league does not interfere with school baseball.

Post 81 tryouts near

Greenfield Post 81, which features both a senior and junior team, will be conducting registration and tryouts at Veterans Memorial Field at 2 p.m. on the following dates: April 29, May 5, May 6 and May 12. Senior team members must be 19 and under, while juniors must be 17 and under, by Dec. 31, 2018.

Players from all Franklin County schools are eligible to try out. Players are encouraged to make as many tryouts as possible. Please bring your glove, cleats and birth certificates. Those players from a previous Post 81 roster must attend tryouts to be eligible for the 2018 team.

Edge Blast

The seventh annual Keene State “Edge” Basketball Blast will take place May 12 and 13 at Keene State University.

Cost is $300 per team and is open to teams of girls and boys in grades fourth through 12th.
