TURNERS FALLS — It’s lights out for approximately 20 overhead streetlights in Turners Falls.

The utility-pole mounted lights will be shut off to remove “redundant and excessive” overhead lights resulting from the recently installed Avenue A LED Streetscape Lighting project, states a press release from the town.

The lights will be shut off on a trial basis through June 1, then the lights will be considered for permanent removal.

Approximately three years ago, the town received money in the form of a community development block grant to replace pedestrian streetlights from 2nd to 5th streets with LEDs, which are brighter and more efficient.

Last year, the town added some more lights along 5th to 7th streets, including lighting in Peskeomskut Park.

“Everybody loves the new lighting,” Town Planner Walter Ramsey said. “It’s great for business and pedestrians, and the town is much brighter at night; potentially brighter than it needs to be.”

Ramsey emphasized that Turners won’t get rid of all overhead lights; key lights at intersections and crosswalks will be kept for safety.

“It’s a bit of a trial period,” he said, continuing that the public is welcome to give feedback.
