NORTHAMPTON — A former student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst pleaded not guilty Thursday to three charges of rape.

Patrick K. Amara Jr., 22, was arraigned on the charges in Hampshire Superior Court. He is being represented by attorney John Drake. Indictments handed up by a grand jury last month list Amherst as Amara’s place of residence.

Few details about the allegations are known.

According to the indictments, the incidents allegedly occurred in Hadley on April 30, 2016.

Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Jennifer Suhl said in an email that police learned of the allegations in October 2016 and began investigating them immediately. Amara was not arrested on the charges.

Following his arraignment Thursday, Amara was released on conditions that he report to the Hadley Police Department to submit to a booking procedure, that he have no contact with the alleged victim, stay away from the UMass Amherst campus and surrender his passport.

UMass spokesman Ed Blaguszewski said that as of July 12, 2017, Amara Jr. was no longer enrolled at the university. Amara’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 27.
