TURNERS FALLS — Four teacher positions will be eliminated as part of the Fiscal Year 2019 budget for the Gill-Montague Regional School District, including a two secondary-level positions and a life skills teacher.

At a public hearing for the district’s budget, Superintendent Michael Sullivan presented new information, including some specifics about the four positions that will be eliminated, making way for a $230,000 decrease in the budget. The proposed budget stands at $9.7 million.

One special education teacher at Sheffield will be retiring. A middle school life skills teacher will also be eliminated, but according to Sullivan, the teacher only has one student in the middle school. However, the teacher also works with high schoolers.

The specific positions for the secondary-level cuts have not been determined yet.

“We are not ready to give those specific assignments yet,” Sullivan said.

Also at the meeting, Sullivan disclosed that in order to meet Montague’s Affordable Assessment, the school district will have to reduce their current proposed budget by $74,627. It is not clear yet what adjustments will be made to meet this number.

There will be two more meetings before the budget is voted on mid-March.
