Leyden’s Rebecca Rodgers got her 2018 U.S. Curling Mixed Doubles Championship off to a strong start.
The 17-year old Pioneer Valley Regional School student opened her tournament with a victory Wednesday along with partner Charlie Thompson. The duo defeated Regan Birr and Todd Birr of Minnesota, 6-5, in a nail-biter during the opening match of Pool B action in the event held at Eau Claire Curling Club in Eau Claire, Wisc.
Rodgers and Thompson suffered their first loss of the tournament Thursday afternoon, as the Minnesota tandem of Jessica Schultz and Derrick McLean claimed an 8-3 win.
The team’s third match of the day was still being played after deadline Thursday night, and they are slated to finish up Pool B action today with a pair of matches at 2:30 and 8:30 p.m. Quarterfinals are set for Saturday while semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday.

GMS results
David Carey and Mav Ward scored 14 points each Thursday to lead Greenfield Middle School to a 55-17 win over Pioneer Middle School in a boys’ basketball game.
Greenfield improved to 6-1 on the season.
Khalil Brown chipped in 10 points for the winners, while Drew Conant and Ryan Cote each added 4 points.
• In girls’ action, Amber Bergeron scored 13 points but GMS fell to Pioneer, 24-20.
Aneesa Brewer added 3 points in the loss. Brielle Widelo and Angie Rivera played well defensively.
No results for Pioneer were reported.
Public skate event
FMC Ice Sports will host a weekend long USA Public Skate event at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield Feb. 9 through 11.
General admission is $5 per person and rental skates are available for an additional $5 on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The times for the themed skate are:
• Friday, Feb. 9 from 9-10:50 p.m.
• Saturday, Feb. 10 from noon-1:50 p.m.
• Sunday, Feb. 11 from 4:10-6 p.m.

NMH hockey wins
Ben Stefanini scored two goals as Northfield Mount Hermon School hockey continued its winning ways thanks to a 3-1 victory over Avon Old Frams Wednesday at McCollum Ice Arena in Gill.
Jack Quinn also tallied in the win for the Hoggers, which are currently ranked No. 6 in New England with a 14-2-2 record.
