MONTAGUE CENTER — Ahead of plans to start construction on safety and traffic improvements on Main Street at the end of July, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is seeking feedback on the current road conditions.

The survey is open until Sunday, July 19, and is estimated to take less than five minutes to complete. The survey is available online at surveymonkey.com/r/MontagueCenter.

The goal of the survey is for people who travel on Main Street in Montague Center to give their feedback on the existing conditions, including their perceptions of “safety, comfort and overall street conditions,” according to a survey notice from the town of Montague.

This Complete Streets Funding Program project involves making changes to the roadway, including crosswalks, curb ramps, crosswalk flashing beacons, bicycle lanes from North Street to Station Street, and Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA) bus stop improvements, among other changes geared toward improving driver, pedestrian and cyclist safety and access.

Another survey will be made available after construction is finished to help the state better understand how its Complete Streets grant program, designed to help municipalities to design and finance transportation improvements, impacts communities.

The effort to improve the roadway in Montague Center has been ongoing since 2018, when the goal was identified in that year’s Complete Streets Prioritization Plan. In 2024, designs by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin (VHB) were first presented, and in early 2025, the town received $499,682 from MassDOT for project construction.

Public information sessions were held to gather feedback on the proposed improvements, and earlier this year, the town announced updates to the road design by Bowman Engineering. Residents at a January public information session voiced concerns about speeding and pushed for traffic-calming features, like raised crosswalks.
