Turners Falls, MA – Joan Mary May, 91, of Sunset Drive, Turners Falls died peacefully at home on August 8, 2026. She was born in Millers Falls on March 10,1935. Joan attended schools in Millers and Turners Falls, graduating from Turners Falls High School in 1952. She attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse in 1955.
Joan married Lloyd E. May in 1955.
She was proudly employed at the Farren Memorial Hospital until 1988 and completed her forty seven year nursing career as the evening supervisor at the Franklin Nursing and Rehab Center in Greenfield.
After her retirement, Joan enjoyed NASCAR racing and the Hallmark Channel. She did jigsaw puzzles and the daily Wonderword. She maintained contact with her nursing pals and close friends. Joan was extremely proud of her family and home. She took meticulous care of her yard. She strived to be independent.
Joan was a regular communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls.
Her survivors include a daughter, Cheryl May (Wayne) of Turners Falls; a son, Kevin May (Karen) of Hatfield, MA; and a daughter, Shelley May of Turners Falls; four grandchildren, Christopher, Stephanie, Kevin Jr., and Kelly; ten great grandchildren, Alexandra, CJ, Evelyn, Kace, Kaelyn, Jack, Madison, Annabelle, Nora and David; three nephews; and several cousins.
Joan was predeceased by her husband of forty five years, Llyod E. May in 2001; her son, Daniel Paul May; as well as her parents, sister and brother.
A Liturgy of Christina Burial will be held Tuesday 8/11 at 10am at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery in Turners Falls.
A calling hour will be held Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:30am at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.
