The University of Vermont scored twice in the third period to pull out a 2-2 tie against the University of Massachusetts in a Hockey East game Friday night in Burlington, Vt.
UMass (9-9-1 overall, 3-5-1 HE) led 1-0 on the strength of a Cale Maker first-period goal as he made his return from playing for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships.
Derek Lodermeier scored an unassisted goal 3 minutes, 14 seconds into the period to tie the game for the Catamounts. UMass went back in front as John Leonard buried a goal on an assist from Niko Hildenbrand with 4:38 to play, but the Catamounts (4-13-5, 1-7-4) tied the game 23 seconds later on a Matt O’Donnell goal.
Matt Murray finished with 31 saves in the UMass net.
Great Falls/GMS results
Amber Bergeron scored 16 points on Friday but Greenfield Middle School suffered a 34-24 loss to Great Falls Middle School in a girls’ basketball game.
Aneesa Brewer added 3 points in the loss, while Brie Widelo and Rachel Dodge each played strong defensively.
No results from Great Falls were reported.
KOC Hoop Shoot
The Greenfield Knights of Columbus Council 133 will hold its Hoop Shoot at 3 p.m. today at the Greenfield YMCA.
The competition is open to all girls and boys in Franklin County between the ages of 9 and 14 as of Jan. 1.
NMH edged by Montverde
A putback with 1.3 seconds remaining lifted Montverde Academy CBD (Fla.) to a 64-62 victory over Northfield Mount Hermon School in a boys’ basketball game Friday night at Forslund Gymnasium in Gill.
NMH (13-2) trailed 34-30 at halftime, and Noah Kirkwood hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 62-62 with 11 seconds remaining. Montverde’s shot on the ensuing end came off the rim, but the visitors grabbed the rebound and put back the game-winner with 1.3 seconds left for a 64-62 advantage. The Hoggers advanced the ball up the court and had a desperation alley-oop chance that did not find the mark.
Kirkwood led the way for NMH with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while Nate Laszewski added 19 points and 4 rebounds.
NMH plays Sunday morning at 9 a.m. against Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) in the Spaulding HoopHall Classic at Springfield College.
