Senior Center hosts historic hurricane talk Friday at 11

NORTHFIELD — The Senior Center is hosting a presentation on the Hurricane of 1938 on Friday, Sept. 22, starting at 11 a.m.

Council on Aging Director Heather Tower will facilitate discussion and show a film on the hurricane featuring local residents. The presentation commemorates the hurricane’s 79th anniversary.

Cushman Library to host ‘Walden’ book discussions

BERNARDSTON — Cushman Library is hosting a book discussion series starting Oct. 2 in celebration of Henry David Thoreau’s 200th birthday.

Each discussion will focus on a different aspect of Thoreau’s classic work “Walden,” and will begin at 7 p.m.

Discussions include:

“Walden Wisdom: Then and Now,” will be led by Cushman Library Trustee and retired Keene State College professor Anne-Marie Mallon on Monday, Oct. 2.

“The Road to Walden” led by local literary presenter and researcher Barry Deitz on Monday, Oct. 23.

An analysis of the book through the perspective of organic gardener Cathryn Thomas, also a Cushman Library Trustee and owner of Cat’s Croft, on Monday, Nov. 20.

And “The Life and Times of Thoreau” presented by Deitz on Monday, Dec. 11.

Those interested in attending can participate in one or all discussions. Thanks to a donation of 10 books from The Walden Woods Project at the Thoreau Institute in Lincoln, Cushman Library has several copies of “Walden” to lend.

Bernardston voter deadline nearing

BERNARDSTON — The last day to register to vote in the Oct. 25 special town meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 4, by 8 p.m.

Though everyone is welcome at town meetings, only registered voters can vote at one or speak unless given permission by the moderator to be heard.
