The Franklin Tech volleyball team cruised past Mohawk Trail Regional, 3-0, on Tuesday in Turners Falls. Set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17 in the Western league matchup.
The Eagles (6-2, 5-0 Western) are ranked seventh in the state in the first MIAA power rankings for Division 5. They are the highest ranked local team in Div. 5. Franklin Tech has a nice core of players who have played together for a long time.
“The strength of the team is experience,” Franklin Tech coach Jade Cuevas said. “They’ve been playing together now for two or three years. There’s more comfort with being together on the court.”

Emma Petersen is one of three seniors on the team. Last year’s team made it to the Round of 16 before falling to Lenox in the Berkshires.
“Not only as a team but as friends too we mesh really well,” Petersen said. “It helps on and off the court. We click really well. We know each other and we know how each other plays. We’ve been playing together for a couple years now. All good things come from that.”
The powerful Sarah Beckwith led the Eagles with nine kills and added seven digs. Beckwith’s hitting is a major weapon for Franklin Tech. Madison Pettengill added five aces, seven kills and five digs. Laura Fuess and Pettengill bring a lot of size to the net for Franklin Tech. Janiylah Wan had two aces, a kill, three digs and five assists.
Mohawk (2-7, 1-5 Western) dropped its second straight after a win over Athol on Sept. 23. Aurora Moynihan had four digs for the Warriors. Emmalee Inman had two kills with an ace and a block. Zoey-Mae Shearer led the offense with two assists.
Greenfield 3, Mahar 0 — The Green Wave swept the Senators at Nichols Gymnasium. Set scores were 30-28, 25-13 and 25-16 in the Western matchup. Amy Mihailicenco had nine digs, seven kills, five aces and two blocks. Rose Fortin added seven aces and three kills. Ashlyn Koscinski chipped in with seven kills and five digs. Isabella Disciullo had five aces.
Pioneer 3, Turners Falls 1 — Serenity Brown had 14 digs for the Panthers in the win over the Thunder in Turners Falls. Sophia Wood added five assists. Ryleigh Goodwin had five kills to lead the offense.
Boys soccer
Franklin Tech 4, Westfield Tech 4 — The Eagles settled for a tie against the Wildcats on the road in an independent matchup. Franklin Tech erased three different deficits in the game. Santiago Buri Rosales scored unassisted in the first half for the Eagles. Nate Gheorghita scored on a corner kick from Nick Prasol in the second half. Cody Yetter scored twice in the second half with assists coming from Nate Gheorghita and Bennett Bardwell.
Mahar 3, Smith Academy 1 — Dylan Roy scored twice in the Senators’ win over the Falcons at the Woodward Complex in Schmid play. Max Kimball had a goal and an assist for Mahar. Jhean Rocha also had an assist. Lucas Hart made six saves in net.
Athol 5, PVCA 1 — The Bears thrashed the Eagles at O’Brien Field. Lucas L’Ecuyer had two goals and an assist for Athol. Dillon Boudreau opened the scoring in the 10th minute for the Bears. Noah Kapise and Nathan Parayson also scored. John Robertson and Ralle Anderson added assists. Drake Wing made nine saves.
Girls soccer
Mahar 3, Smith Academy 0 — Maggie Ringer, Stellina Moore and Lily Bajnoci all scored in the Bi-County win for the Senators in Hatfield. Erin Parse and Addy Winters had assists. Jaya McBroom made two saves in the shutout.
Palmer 5, Greenfield 2 — The Panthers pulled away from the Green Wave in the second half in the Pioneer North matchup in Greenfield. Tayler Bergeron scored in the first half on a breakaway. The senior is now 12 points away from 100 for her career. Zephyr Jetzon assisted on the play and added a goal in the second half. Valerie Bzomowski made 17 saves.
Frontier 0, Pioneer 0 — An independent matchup in Northfield ended in a tie between the Panthers and the Redhawks. Through the midfield, Jaelyn Boliski, Amy VanDoren and Luci Burnap covered lots of ground while Leah Potter anchored the defense. Keeper Maggie Tsipenyuk made 21 saves. Jazzy Hayes made one save for the Redhawks.
Athol 2, St. Mary’s 1 — The Bears picked up a Bi-County win over the Saints in Westfield.
Field hockey
Frontier 1, Minnechaug 0 — An unassisted goal by Addie Harrington was the difference in the win for the Redhawks (7-0, 5-0 Suburban) over the Falcons in a Suburban league matchup in Wilbraham. Brooke Charest made two saves for Frontier.
Golf
Jack Day and Braeden Talbot of the Franklin Tech golf team placed tied for second at the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference Boys Golf Invitational Two-Ball tournament at Westover Golf Course in Chicopee on Tuesday. The duo shot a combined 71. Longmeadow placed first with a 66. Agawam also shot a 71, with Ludlow placing third with a 72.

Chicopee 6, Frontier 3 — Henry Pleasant scored twice for the Redhawks in a home loss to the Pacers. Sebastian Migeon also scored, with an assist coming from Pleasant. Mason Weis made three saves.
Volleyball
Athol 3, Hampden Charter 0 — The Bears swept the Wolves at Mallet Gymnasium. Sets scores were 25-16, 25-9 and 25-19. Giana Vaillancourt (eight kills) and Maddie Desrosiers (six kills) led the offensive effort. Vaillancourt added six assists.
