The Weather Gods ran afoul Thursday night in Northfield.
Host Pioneer Valley Regional School’s hopes for a late comeback were dashed in the sixth inning when lightning delayed and ultimately brought the Panthers’ baseball matchup with Mohawk Trail Regional High School to an early conclusion. The game was called due to the dangerous storm, and since the sixth wasn’t completed, things reverted back to just five innings and Mohawk picked up a key 5-2 victory in a battle of teams tied for first place atop the Hampshire League East.
Mohawk (13-4, 6-2 HL) took control of a 2-2 game with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Luke Viens and Adam Hallenback singled, and Viens ultimately scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Ian Eckler. Hallenbeck scampered home on a passed ball, staking the Warriors to a 4-2 lead.
The lead grew to 5-2 in the fifth, but Pioneer (9-8, 5-3) appeared to get things cooking in the sixth. Bryce Dobosz tripled to lead off and scored on a Jordan Loughman ground-out to pull the hosts within two at 5-3, but lightning followed shortly thereafter and play was called with one out in the sixth.
Daniel Szafran had two hits and an RBI for Mohawk, which stayed even with Smith Academy atop the West standings at 6-2. Eckler drove in two runs in the win.
Hallenbeck earned the victory for Mohawk, tossing all five official innings. He struck out nine and walked just one.
The Warriors host Hopkins Academy on Monday while Pioneer hosts Franklin County Technical School.

Turners (8-8, 3-4 HL) led 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, but the host Orioles (6-10, 2-6) scored twice in their final at-bat to force extra innings.

The visiting Eagles allowed seven runs in the bottom of the second, and host McCann Technical School held on for a 17-10 win in Tri-County League play in North Adams.
Tech (7-10, 5-7 TCL) took a quick 2-0 lead with a pair in the top of the first before McCann responded with seven in the second and four in the third to ultimately jump out to an 11-4 advantage.
The Eagles cut into the margin in the top of the sixth, pulling within 14-10, but the Hornets (12-4, 9-2) answered with three in the home half to create some breathing room.
