Greenfield’s Jackson Campbell and Turners Falls’ Madison Liimatainen both took home trophies at the Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot State competition Saturday at Anna Maria College in Paxton.

Campbell made 17 out of 25 shots to finish second in the 9-year-old Boys’ Division, while Liimatainen made 11 out of 25 to finish third in the 10-year-old Girls’ Division.

Frontier U-16 moves to 2-0

Greenfield’s Asier Areta potted the game-winning goal with 14 minutes left in regulation to lift the FC Frontier U-16 soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Palmer in a Pioneer Valley Junior Soccer League contest on Sunday.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Frontier tied the game when Sunderland’s Tenzin Tsundue placed a beautiful free kick into the box. Tsundue found a charging Tanner Finch, who tied the game 1-1 with a header into the net.

Noah Jacques stepped in and played well in goal for an injured James Morgan. FC Frontier improved to 2-0 on the season.

KMP Shootout

Mark Kennedy and Mike Johnson carded a low gross of 71, tying with Mark Kennedy and David Kennedy for top honors in Sunday’s KMP Shootout held at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Matt Bete and Tom Helbig had the low net of 63 on Sunday, with Bete and Paul Shulda nabbing second with a net of 65.

Bucky Bash

Jason Yuryan and KC Finley carded a low gross of 61, capturing the top spot at Saturday’s Bucky Bash at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Nate Burdick and Rob Haigh finished with a 63, putting the duo second in gross.

Brodie Conant and Bob Provost posted a low net score of 60, ahead of runners-up Mike Archer/Roy Emerson and Ike Purington/Mitchell Parker, who both amassed 64s.

The women’s gross was won by Teresa Varner and Phyllis Canon with a round of 79, edging Diane Carme and Kathie Fahey (83).

Liz Dolby and Sue Welenc took low net honors with a 73.

NMH results

Led by Erich Roman’s team-high 19 kills, the Northfield Mount Hermon School boys’ volleyball team collected a 25-18, 16-25, 25-16, 25-20 victory over Phillips Andover Academy Saturday in Gill.

Roman paced the offense for the Hoggers, with Louis Blanc adding 9 kills in the victory.

• Elsewhere, the boys’ varsity tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Phillips Exeter Academy on Saturday.

• The NMH ultimate team took third on Saturday in the Middletown Ultimate Tournament thanks to a sterling 4-1 overall record.

NMH defeated the Fieldston JV team (11-2), Scarsdale (11-3), Middletown (10-9) and Xavier (12-5), while losing only to Columbia (7-5).

Busy weekend for DA

Wins on both the boys’ and girls’ sides paced the Deerfield Academy rowing teams on Saturday. The boys’ team swept all their races at the Pomfret Quad, with boats Nos. 1 through 7 all finishing first overall. In the girls’ race, boats one and two took first, boat No. 3 was second in its race, and boats four and five were third overall.

The varsity girls’ lacrosse team eeked out an 11-10 win in overtime against Westminster School, while the varsity baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against Phillips Exeter Academy via scores of 5-2 and 16-5.

• In girls’ water polo action, DA dropped games to Hopkins School (10-2) and Greenwich High School (11-2) on Saturday.

• The track & field teams competed in a tri-meet on Saturday with The Hotchkiss School and Loomis Chaffee School. The girls’ took second and the boys’ team was third overall.

• The girls’ tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Hotchkiss, while the softball team was edged by Williston Northampton School, 4-2.

Ultimate

Four Rivers wins tourney

It was a successful weekend for the Four Rivers Charter School girls’ varsity ultimate team. The squad swept through the A Division at the Northfield Mount Hermon Tournament, beating the Four Rivers JV team in the finals to capture the title on Saturday.

The varsity team picked up pool-play wins over Needham High School, Somerville High School and Pioneer Valley School for the Performing Arts. That put Four Rivers into the title game, coincidentally against its JV team, which won the other bracket.

The varsity team allowed just six points all day in the four wins, with captains Luci Sweitzer, Sophie Garbus, and Lucia Mason all playing well and powering Four Rivers to the championship.

Next up for the team is the Four Rivers Tournament, scheduled for Saturday at Greenfield Community College.

Vaultapalooza on tap

The annual Vaultapalooza competition will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield.

The competition features various high school pole vaulters in western Mass. and is free to watch.

Colleges

Hudson leads Merrimack

Garrett Hudson struck out six in six innings to lead Merrimack College to a 4-2 win over St. Anselm College in a Northeast 10 baseball game Saturday in Manchester, N.H.

Hudson allowed six hits, three walks and one run in the performance before getting lifted with a 4-1 lead. The win helped Hudson improve to 4-2 on the season.

Merrimack improved to 22-17 on the season and 16-6 in NE-10 play.

UMass tennis captures A-10 title

For the first time since 2001, the UMass women’s tennis team will advance to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Atlantic 10 Championship title on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

The second-seeded Minutewomen defeated four-time defending champion and top-seeded VCU, 4-2, in a thrilling match that saw Anna Woosley earn the winning point at No. 4 singles in her third set.

The result adds a storybook finish for head coach Judy Dixon, who announced prior to the season that she would retire at the end of her 25th year coaching UMass tennis. She coached the previous Atlantic 10 Championship team in 2001 and has been named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year on five occasions in her career.
