ATHOL — The Athol-Royalston Regional School District superintendent is leaving his post for a new job less than a year after taking the helm in Athol.
Steven Meyer announced at Wednesday’s School Committee meeting that he had reached a contract agreement with Clinton Public Schools and planned to sign his new contract the following day. He said he would deliver a resignation letter to School Committee Chairwoman Nancy Melbourne today.
Meyer said he is taking this opportunity to be closer to his family and his departure is not the result of frustration or disappointment.
“I believe that the district is heading in a positive direction and throughout the transition process I will provide any support that I can to continue the progress being made,” he said in a prepared statement. “I will take on whatever role the School Committee asks of me during the transition process.”
Meyer said he will look back fondly on his time in Athol and Royalston.
“From an organizational standpoint I believe there is a supportive School Committee focused on improving the school system, a beautiful new elementary school and an improved relationship between the teachers association and the administration with a focus on doing what is in the best interests of students,” he read.
Meyer also mentioned the creation of a district-wide instructional leadership team. He thanked the School Committee for the opportunities he has been given.
Meyer became Athol-Royalston Regional School District superintendent in July following two years as assistant superintendent.
The Clinton School Committee voted 3-2 to offer him a contract. Meyer previously said he started his career in Clinton as a math teacher and math department chairman.
Clinton School Committee Chairman Robert Ebstein, who voted in favor of Meyer, has said he is impressed by Meyer’s devotion to children and mastery of scheduling. He referred to Meyer’s references as sterling.
A western Pennsylvania native, Meyer has worked in education for about 15 years. He said he has a doctorate in education, a master’s degree in mathematics for educators and a master’s in education and organizational management. He worked as an assistant principal and then principal in Winchendon before moving to Athol-Royalston.
