We are starting to recover from the unspeakable tragedy that befell Warwick recently. We pray for comfort and peace for Scott and Vivian Seago.

There were numerous people, inside and outside the town, who provided support and assistance. I won’t mention specific names, lest I omit anyone.

The first responders, the Warwick Fire Department, were outstanding in their dedication. Theirs was the worst duty to perform, and we’ll never know the emotional toll it took on them. They were assisted in this duty by the firefighters from 16 other towns. They, the state fire marshal, the state police, the Sheriff’s Department, and the Warwick Police Department, participated in an operation that, despite its shadow of sorrow, was dominated by efficiency, cooperation and empathy. Additional support was provided by the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Warwick Community School, the Pioneer Valley Regional School District, the Trinitarian Congregational Church of Warwick and Our Lady of Czestochowa Church.

The townspeople immediately geared up for support operations. The town coordinator more than lived up to his job title. An apartment was secured for Scott and Vivian and, through the generosity of our citizens, was completely furnished.

On Sunday, the Warwick Community School was opened so that people could just come together. There was no planned program, just conversation and lots of hugs. Senator Stan Rosenberg and Representative Suzannah Whipps-Lee paid their respects and offered support.

The following Saturday, a reception was held after the funeral at the Warwick Community School. A superabundance of food was provided by the town, many businesses, the Salvation Army and the Sheriff’s Department. There were more hugs all around, and many tears. The Salvation Army brought two therapy dogs who had a calming effect on many people. I saw Vivian holding one; I hope it gave her comfort.

And although “thank you” seems totally inadequate to express our gratitude, we thank all of you for your care, generosity and support. Like the Phoenix, we rise.
