The Montague Water Department is asking residents to help clear fire hydrants so firefighters can acess them in an emergency.

Mike Brown, superintendent for the water district, said the hydrants can be hard to find when there is a lot of snow and the roads have been plowed, creating snow banks.

“Especially when you get this deep snow in the bank, they’re hard to find.”

He said the town does not have an ordinance requiring homeowners clear fire hydrants, but the town can fine someone $50 if they shovel snow onto a fire hydrant.

Brown said it’s essentially insurance to make sure your house can be treated in case of a fire.

“It makes a lot of sense to make sure you’re protected, if you have one close to your home,” he said.
