TURNERS FALLS — Tuesday night’s Gill-Montague Regional School Committee meeting could see a vote on the Turners Falls High School mascot issue.
The meeting, which will be at 6:30 p.m. after an executive session, will be held in the high school’s auditorium because a large crowd is expected.
The meeting is also an open forum for the public to ask questions about the district’s proposed budget.
“We have been given (reason) to understand that there will be a larger than normal audience to observe the discussion on the logo/nickname/mascot,” Langknecht said in an email. “We want to accommodate that and the crowds who will attend to participate in the budget public hearing.”
Each School Committee meeting begins with a public participation section where anyone can speak to the School Commitee for a period of three minutes. The total public participation section has a 15-minute limit.
Langknecht said he anticipates a lot of public participation and will be monitoring each speaker’s time, and won’t extend the total time unless the committee approves.
During its last meeting, the Committee tabled a vote that would decide if the School Committee does an up or down vote on the mascot during Tuesday’s meeting. So once that initial vote is taken, it will determine if the School Committee will make that decision on Tuesday.
After that vote was tabled on Tuesday, petitioners met with the Montague Selectboard and recived approval to put a non-binding referendum on the May town ballot. The group is also working to get similar measures on the Gill and Erving ballots.
