TURNERS FALLS — Sheffield Elementary school is the winner of a pediatric cancer charity and New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will visit the school later this spring as its prize.
The school, as well as Turners Falls High School and Great Falls Middle School, came together and raised nearly $17,000 for One Mission, a charity in Framingham that helps families in Massachusetts whose children have cancer.
The school held a “Buzz Off” event where about 50 students, staff and friends of the school shaved their heads as a fundraiser for the competition.
Sheffield entered the competition because a student at the school fighting leukemia recently went into remission.
The Buzz Off was an emotional and uplifting day at the school and Sheffield Assistant Principal Christine Limoges said the kids erupted in screams when they found out they won the competition.
“My mind is blown,” Limoges said. “I can’t believe we, in this community, pulled this together for kids with cancer.”
Limoges said she doesn’t know exactly when Gronkowski will come to the school but that it will be sometime this spring.
“This is for the students, and the high school and middle school students, and it’s as much a celebration for our students for a job well done,” she said.
