GREENFIELD — A man was transported by LifeFlight medical helicopter to the hospital Wednesday evening after being hit by a car.

The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Barr Avenue and Silver Street, according to officials from Greenfield Fire and Police departments.

Greenfield Police Sgt. David Rice said the man, in his 60s, was in a crosswalk when he was struck by a Toyota Prius traveling east.

“The pedestrian was injured,” Rice said. “He was transported via lifeflight helicopter to Baystate Medical Center.”

The emergency prompted police to shut down Silver Street for about 30 minutes.

At the scene just after 6 p.m., a MedCare ambulance was seen leaving with its lights on. Nearby, three cruisers idled while a few police officers remained on Silver Street. A small car was parked in front of one of the police cars.

Rice said the accident is under investigation. Further information was not immediately available Wednesday night.
