Social Justice Sabbath Service set for today at 10

GREENFIELD — Temple Israel will hold a special Social Justice Sabbath service in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., today at 10 a.m. at 27 Pierce St. Some of the special material will be from Torah and the Prophets, as well as songs and poems of the Civil Rights movement. The service will be led by Sher Sweet and Yosl Kurland. A vegetarian/dairy potluck lunch will be shared after the service. All are welcome.

MLK Jr. event set for Monday in Athol

ATHOL — The Athol and Orange clergy and Interfaith Neighbors Connecting will hold an event remembering the powerful life and value of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday, Jan. 16 at the Athol Congregational Church, 1225 Chestnut St., near the uptown common.

“The Time is Always Right … to do what is right” is the theme for the event this year. We will learn about and remember the dedication of Dr. King to courageous, selfless service on behalf of the powerless.

According to Rev. Dr. Beverly Prestwood-Taylor, “The day will include activities for the whole family. Presenters from the secular as well as religious organizations have prepared discussion topics, service opportunities and expressive music and art experiences. Participants may choose the workshops and opportunities for volunteer service that speak to them. The options include appropriate activities for school-age children as well as music and art for adults.”

The event will begin with breakfast at 9 a.m., and workshops from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. An inspiring community worship service will be held at 11:30. The event will be followed by a light lunch. Reservations and information are available by calling 978-249-6202 or atholuccoffice@gmail.com.

Ecclesiastical Council is Jan. 29

BERNARDSTON — The Franklin Association, United Church of Christ (UCC), will hold an Ecclesiastical Council for Lee-Ellen Strawn, chaplain at Northfield Mt. Hermon School and member of the United Church of Bernardston. The council will be held at the United Church of Bernardston on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.

Ecclesiastical Council is one of the final steps in a candidate’s journey to ordained ministry in the UCC. At this meeting, the candidate makes a presentation based on his or her ordination paper to members of the Franklin Association. On completion, the council votes whether or not to authorize ordination. The public is welcome to attend. A coffee hour will follow.
