The Majestic Theater in West Springfield will continue the celebration of its 20th season of live theater with the presentation of “Amadeus,” the award-winning drama that profiles the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. The play will run Jan. 5 through Feb. 12.
Ticket for the play range from $25 to $33 and are available by calling or visiting the box office, which is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are also available for the rest of the Majestic’s 20th season lineup, which includes “Painting Churches” (Feb. 23 through April 2) and the season-ending “La Cage Aux Folles” (April 13 through May 21).
The play opens with Salieri as an old man having outlived his fame, and claiming to have used poison to assassinate. The story shifts back to a time when the two met.
Salieri has adored Mozart’s compositions but is shocked by his boorish behavior. A devout Catholic, he cannot believe that God would bestow Mozart over him with the gift of genius. While masquerading as an ally, Salieri does his utmost to destroy Mozart’s reputation and success.
