Library foundation fixed

SHELBURNE FALLS — Foundation work for Arms Library’s Pratt Memorial Building has been completed by Galvin and Sons, for less money than was anticipated.

Selectman Robert Manners said Jones Whitsett Architects has been contacted to go forward with designing interior renovations. The 1914 Beaux Arts-style library building was damaged by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, and phase 1 of the renovation was completed last year, with a new copper domed roof and drainage system. The second phase of the renovation is to include window improvements, interior mural restorations, and electrical improvements.

Randy Gobeil of the Arms Library Association and Cynthia Caporaso of the Pratt Memorial Library Building Committee have both recently resigned from their library positions. Manners thanked them for their service and said they will be greatly missed.

Grant sought for tennis court fix

SHELBURNE — The Board of Selectmen has agreed to support a $90,000 resurfacing project for the Cowell Gymnasium outdoor tennis court —  in hopes the town gets a Mass. PARC grant that would pay for at least 70 percent of the project.

If the town gets the Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities grant, it would pay for about $65,000 of the tennis court renovation, with the town to pay a matching share of about $25,000. Gym Director Emily Crehan said the board’s show of support will help the grant application.
