Brian Dobosz of Turners Falls led the way during a slow day of checks on Thursday’s Day 4 of the Massachusetts shotgun deer hunting season.

Only 13 deer were reported on Thursday, although Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne could not be reached for its checks on the day. Dobosz’s 165-pound, 7-pointer was the heaviest buck shot and was checked into Grrr Gear in Orange, where six deer led the way.

Benjamin Purrington of Richmond, N.H. checked a 140-pound, 7-pointer into Grrr Gear, and Andrew Belloli of Orange brought in a 260-pound male bear.

Paul Curtiss of Erving checked a 156-pound, 7-pointer to Bitzer Hatchery in Montague, which had four checks on the day. Chester Chadwick of Colrain checked a 149-pound, 9-pointer into Overwatch Outpost in Charlemont, which had three deer checked. Overwatch also had a 36-pound coyote checked on the day by John Kiablick of Buckland.

Montague Elks Hoop Shoot

The Montague Elks will hold its annual Youth Hoop Shoot on Dec. 10 at the Turners Falls High School gymnasium.

Registration for the event takes place at 9:30 a.m., and the shoot will begin at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to boys and girls ages 8 to 13 as of April 1, 2017.

The Franklin County Hockey Association’s “Learn to Skate” program meets Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.
