‘Edwardian Christmas Tea’ in New Salem

NEW SALEM — The Friends of the New Salem Public Library plan to host an “Edwardian Christmas Tea” in the historic New Salem Academy Building on the Town Common from 3 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 3.

Tea and snacks will be served beginning at 3 p.m., followed by a presentation by Mrs. Gordon, who will take you back in time as she describes her plans for the 1908 holiday, including preparation of a Christmas dinner. She will talk about what ladies, gentlemen and children wanted in their stockings that year, plus consult her 1908 Sears & Roebuck catalogue to let you know what things cost on your Christmas wish list.

If you would like to get into the tea time spirit (though not a requirement), then wear something in Victorian style, such as gloves, hats and fans. There will also be a holiday book sale, where the Friends offer a wide selection of lightly used books. Also, a raffle is being held for a tea-themed basket.

Selectmen Chairwoman Kathy Reinig said the pole cannot be taller than 10 feet above the average height of area buildings. She said Mobilite is the company installing the pole and Sprint is its customer.
