TURNERS FALLS — Turners Falls High School scored early and often to stay unbeaten, rolling to a 57-0 victory over Franklin County Technical School in an Intrercounty League North football contest at Edward J. Bourdeau Field.
The Indians were led by an impressive ground game, which featured Quinn Doyle rushing for 230 yards and two touchdowns and eclipsing the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the consecutive year, joining Trent Bourbeau as the only Indian back to reach that milestone in back-to-back years.
At the beginning of the game though, it didn’t seem like this would be Doyle’s or Turners Falls’ night.
After the Indians held the Eagles to a three-and-out on their first drive, Franklin Tech punted it away. Doyle was back for the punt but fumbled the ball, giving it back to Franklin Tech. However, Franklin Tech proceeded to turn the ball over on downs and Doyle proceeded to redeem himself.
Following the turnover, Doyle led the Indians to the first score of the game by running for 68 yards on seven carries, including runs of 12, 12 and 15 yards, and capping off the drive with a 4-yard plunge into the end zone. The touchdown was followed up with a successful two-point conversion from Tionne Brown to Nick Croteau.
After another three-and-out by Franklin Tech, Turners Falls proceeded to have another long drive that ran from the end of the first quarter into the middle of the second quarter. After Doyle continued to carry the load on the ground for most of the drive, Brown threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Craver. Craver followed that up with a two-point conversion run, making it 16-0.
On the following kickoff, Franklin Tech’s Javier Colon fumbled the return, giving the ball back to Turners Falls. On the first carry of the drive, Doyle ran for 30 yards and passed 1,000 rushing yards on the year. Doyle continued to run over Franklin Tech on the drive, eventually scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run. Another successful two-point conversion made it 24-0 in favor of Turners Falls.
Turners continued to dominate on the following series, after they forced a turnover on downs from Franklin Tech after a failed fake punt. On the following drive though, the Indians finally seemed like their offense would stall out, committing a holding penalty and eventually facing a third-and-7 at the 37. However, Brown was able to find Owen Ortiz for a 37-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone to extend the lead to 32-0.
Turners opened the second half with a mirror image of the previous scoring drive, capping it off with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Ortiz again. John Torres, Will Roberge and Marcus Sanders all added a touchdown runs to complete the second-half scoring.
