MONTAGUE — The Montague Public Libraries have received a $7,500 grant, which will provide a year of STEM-related educational opportunities as well as allow for the purchase of technology based tools for students to learn from.
The 7,500 grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Service will provide for science educators to come and give presentations to the library. The Library has also partnered with local schools to help implement STEM-related programs and presentations.
Angela Rovatti-Leonard, Youth Services Librarian for The Montague Public Libraries, said that the libraries pursued the grant because they saw a community need for more STEM programs through conversations with local educators. The grant is aimed at students in grades three to eight, but the library hopes to use the grant as a starting point, and expand beyond those grades in coming years.
She also said the program is aimed at reaching kids in upper elementary school and middle school, which the libraries have trouble reaching.
“Technology is a big part of their world and it’s important to reach them where they’re at,” she said.
The tech tools include Makey Makey kits, which teach students about circuits through use of conductive materials like play dough. The money will also be used to buy Lego WeDo kits, which combine Lego toys with basic robotic skills. The money will also allow for the purchase of STEM-related books and movies to add to the libraries collections.
Rovatti-Leonard said that grants like this, administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, allow for the library to expand the definition of what they do.
“It’s broadening the definition of what a library is and does in the community,” she said.
The grant work is in the planning stages now, with most public events taking place later this fall and in the spring. Those interested can check for updates on the Montague Public Libraries Facebook page or their website, http://montaguepubliclibraries.org/.
