GREENFIELD — A Greenfield man accused of stabbing his father in downtown Greenfield Wednesday night has been ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing set for Wednesday, April 22.

Carlos A. Naranjo, 32, appeared in Greenfield District Court before Judge William Mazanec III on Thursday morning after being arrested overnight for allegedly stabbing his father, Jorge Naranjo, 61, inside Roberto’s Pizzeria, which his father owns at 80 Federal St. He pleaded not guilty to single counts of armed assault with intent to murder a person 60 or older, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person 60 or older, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

According to a statement of facts submitted by Greenfield Police Sgt. Corey Greene, Jorge Naranjo called 911 at 6:46 p.m. on Wednesday to request immediate medical attention after being stabbed by his son inside the restaurant. He was found in the kitchen with what appeared to be a significant stab wound to his abdomen and another stab wound to his right arm.

He was treated at the scene by medical professionals before being transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center for further treatment. He was eventually airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield due to the seriousness of his injuries. According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Jorge Naranjo is in stable condition as of Thursday morning.

During the police investigation, surveillance footage obtained from the New Inkwell News convenience store — next door to Roberto’s — showed a man whose physical appearance was extremely consistent with Carlos Naranjo’s running toward Main Street from the direction of the restaurant about one minute after the 911 call was made. He was arrested a few hours after the alleged assault at a city residence.

According to Greene, there was already a warrant out for Carlos Naranjo’s arrest.

The suspect was represented in court on Thursday by defense attorney Emily Shallcross, who declined to comment further on the case. Elayna Bartolomeo, of the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, is prosecuting the case.

Tim Dowd, owner of Tim’s Barber Shop at 72 Federal St., has decided to raise money to support the victim and his family with a donation jar on his front counter. Dowd said he has known Jorge Naranjo for 17 years and described him as a wonderful man.

“I needed to do something,” he said.
