CONWAY — Town officials have granted the Greenfield company in charge of the South River floodplain lowering project a little more time to complete non-field work.
During a recent Selectboard meeting, Town Administrator Tom Hutcheson said the original contract required the company to be finished with all work by Oct. 1, a date that was set because of environmental concerns involving habitat used by turtles.
Following the Selectboard’s decision, Davenport Construction’s date to finish field work remains Oct. 1, but the date non-field work, such as completing paperwork, needs to be finished is now Nov. 1.
The floodplain is being lowered to act as a basin to catch river overflow. The project started at least in part because of flooding caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011. According to a report from the U.S. Geological Survey, Conway saw 9.92 inches of rainfall during the storm, about a fifth of what the town usually sees over the course of a year.
Davenport will use the extra time to clean up, fill in ruts and complete paperwork. The extra time won’t cost the town any additional money.
Hutcheson said the company has done a good job on the project so far, and there isn’t any reason to suspect that anything suspicious is going on.
