GREENFIELD — A water main break that closed off a portion of Main Street at Franklin Street Wednesday morning was fixed by 6 p.m., making the road is passable.

Paul Raskevitz said the 12-inch cast iron pipe, which he said could be up to 80 years old, broke around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officers from the Greenfield Police Department noticed the problem and called it in to the Department of Public Works.

The crack running down the pipe’s length was about 8 feet long, he said. Crews on scene were working to replace the pipe at 11 a.m.

Raskevitz said every building between Franklin Street and High Street lost water service.

According to staff of the YMCA, which was closed temporarily, water was restored to the area by mid-afternoon and the YMCA was able to reopen.
