ERVING — High school students from Erving who are interested in careers as automotive technicians participated in Future Tech Night, hosted by Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury in partnership with the Universal Technical Institute in Norwood. Students learned what to expect from a career as an automotive technician as Mercedes-Benz shop foreman Roger Young highlighted the training and skills today’s technicians need, including computer and problem-solving skills.

“The reality is that recent advances in vehicles require that technicians are well-versed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics — and more importantly, can use that knowledge to problem solve,” said UTI-Norwood admissions representative Scott Boydston.

The students toured the service area where they learned how the dealership processes repair orders and had a chance to try some of the latest tools and computerized vehicle diagnostics.

“Repairing today’s car involves just as much time in front of a laptop as it does under the hood and today’s technicians need specialized training. It’s important that technicians have the right educational foundation and I work closely with UTI-Norwood to find qualified, entry-level technicians,” said Young.
