Malcolm Smith smashed two home runs to power St. Stanislaus Society to a 12-8 victory over Between the Uprights in a Montague Co-Rec Softball League double-elimination slo-pitch playoff game Thursday night at Unity Park in Turners Falls.

Chris Kalinowski added a homer and Kelly Markol tripled for St. Stan’s.

Jason Bohonowicz and Adam Bastarache homered for BTU.

Stan’s advances to the winners’-bracket final Saturday at 11 a.m. against Kustom Auto Body.

Road racing

Bob Bezio recorded a time of 20 minutes to top the field Thursday in the Northfield Summer Road Race Series.

Bezio was followed by Isaiah Morrison in the 3.3-mile race, as Morrison finished in 21:22. Isaac Bingham was third in 21:33, Joe Sumner took fourth in 21:36, and Tyssen LaBombard came in fifth (21:41).

Marcy Cabanas finished sixth overall in 22:15 and was the first female finisher, followed by Amy O’Sullivan (23:07) and Amelia Simmonds (24:53).

Next week’s race will be the last of the summer.

Montague Mug Race

The 36th annual Montague Mug Race will be held Saturday in Montague Center.

The 5.5-mile race begins at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common. Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs are given to the top finishers of each division. T-shirts will be available for the first 90 runners. The 12th annual 2-mile Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m. Both races will finish at the ball field.

Registration forms are located at the YMCA, Body Shoppe, Montague Post Office and Parks & Recreation Department. Runners may also register by using runreg.com. The race website is montaguemugrace.com

Valley Storm tryouts

The Valley Storm Softball organization will hold tryouts for its various fast-pitch teams this month.

The Storm has a 12U, 14U and 16U team and the following is information on tryouts for each:

• The 12U team will hold tryouts at Merritt Field at the Sunderland Elementary School on Aug. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Players must not be older than 12 on Jan. 1, 2017 to be eligible and it’s recommended that players attend both tryouts, but it’s not required. Diamond Devils tryouts

The New England Diamond Devils Softball Organization will hold tryouts Sunday at Franklin Pierce College.

The program offers teams at the 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and showcase levels, and is under the direction of two-time national championship coach and Keene High School coach Jim Coppo.

Tryouts are as follows: 10U (2 p.m.), 12U (3 p.m.), 14U, 16U and prospect team (4 p.m.). Registrations begins a half-hour prior to scheduled times.

Ashfield Women’s

Joyce Charland and Mary Stokarski tied with Bev Williams and Cyndie Stetson for first place with a 39 in the Ashfield Community Golf Club Women’s League’s Two-Person Scramble on Thursday morning.

Williams and Stetswon tied for fewest putts with Bev Labelle and Janet Rogers. Both teams finished with 13 putts.

K of C League

Tom Coffin recorded the top point quota of plus-8 during the Knights of Columbus Golf League on Wednesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.

Steve Russo was next at plus-7, while Bob Boivin and Ray Zukowski tied for thrid at plus-4.

Dave Dion was closest to the pin on No. 7 (11 feet, 2 inches), and Matt Kujala was closest on No. 7 (18-7).

Thomas Memorial Ladies

Deb Collins finished with a plus-6 for best point quota during the Thomas Memorial Ladies Golf League on Wednesday in Turners Falls.

Barbara Bennett was second with a plus-5, and Barb Laczynski took third at plus-3. Laczynski also carded the low gross score of 47.

Jenn Murphy was closest to the pin on No. 7 (6-5), while Jeanette Lawrence made the longest putt on No. 9 (11-2).

Water sports

Cookie Bowl

The 26th Annual Cookie Bowl Canoe/Kayak/SUP Race will be held on Aug. 26 at the Stockbridge Bowl.

Registration is at the Boat Ramp at 5 p.m. The race will start at 6pm. Entry fee is $10 per paddler.

Racers should be sure that their boats are zebra mussel free. Any boats that have been in infested waters must be cleaned before entering the lake.

Greenfield Rec

The Greenfield Recreation Department is offering youth soccer programs for Grades K-6 this fall.

• Peewee Soccer — For boys and girls in grades K through 2. The program is a small field, 3 vs. 3 program, which introduces passing, dribbling and shooting skills with weekly instruction and scrimmages. The program runs Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. from Sept. 10 through Oct. 29 at the Green River Swimming & Recreation Area. and costs $30 for residents and $35 for nonresidents.

• Travel Junior League — For grades 3 and 4 with practices once during the week and games on Saturday mornings. Teams travel to surrounding towns as part of the Tri-County League for games. Cost is $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

• Travel Senior League — For grades 5 and 6 with practices once during the week and games on Saturday mornings. Teams travel to surrounding towns as part of the Tri-County League for games. Cost is $45 for residents and $50 for nonresidents.

Deadline to register for all leagues is Sept. 2 and a $5 late fee will be assessed for late registrations.

The Montague Parks & Recreation Department is taking registrations for its Youth Soccer Programs. Coaches are also needed for all levels.

• Start Smart Squirts — Open to children in grades K through 2 and held Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 from Sept. 10 until Oct. 22. Cost is $30 for Montague residents, and $35 for nonresidents.

• Junior Travel Team — Open to children in grades 3 and 4 and held Saturday mornings as part of the Tri-County Youth Soccer League. Cost is $45 for Montague residents, and $50 for non-residents. Practices begin in early September.

• Senior Travel Team — Open to children in grades 5 and 6 and held Saturday mornings as part of the Tri-County Youth Soccer League. Cost is $50 for Montague residents, and $55 for non-residents. Practices begin in early September.

Babe Ruth Fall Ball

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Fall Baseball League will hold registrations this weekend at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.

The team is open to players ages 12 and 13, and home games will be played at Abercrombie Field on a 90-foot diamond. Registrations will take place today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
