CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Authorities say a Massachusetts police officer shot a 27-year-old man, critically wounding him, because he feared for another officer’s life.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Sunday the man is in “very grave condition” at a Boston hospital. The Tyngsborough police officer has been placed on administrative leave.
The Boston Globe reports the incident began as a traffic stop around 9 p.m. Saturday in Tyngsborough, on the New Hampshire border. The man fled in his vehicle, and the officer followed him to Chelmsford.
A Chelmsford officer then tried to stop the vehicle. The man pulled into a parking lot, but backed out when the Chelmsford officer approached, catching him on the car door and dragging him. The Tyngsborough officer then shot the man twice.
The shooting remains under investigation.
