TURNERS FALLS — A garage fire on K Street was quickly knocked down before it could damage the attached house by a combined effort of the homeowner and the Fire Department Monday night.
Deputy Chief John Zellmann of the Turners Falls Fire Department said the fire broke out at 39 K St. around 8:10 p.m. after a resident attempted to dispose of paper used to jump start a grill before the paper had been completely extinguished.
The paper lit a slow-burning fire in some nearby sawdust, and the homeowner began fighting it with a garden hose.
“They knocked down quite a bit with the garden hose,” Zellmann said. The department responded with three engines, a ladder truck and a car to finish the job.
No one was injured, Zellmann said, and the fire did not spread to the house.
