GREENFIELD — The Town Council is expected to have a relatively light meeting Wednesday night, with no big-ticket items or controversial requests on the agenda.
According to council President Brickett Allis, the council will be asked to rescind an order approving a 20-year contract for a solar farm on the Millbrook Well field because SunEdison, the Missouri-based global renewable energy company selected for the project, went bankrupt. Although it was approved by the council last month, an exit clause will allow Greenfield to get out of the contract.
A zoning amendment will also be brought before the council, which would add “light industry, manufacturing or processing plant” as a use allowed by special permit within the Office District.
“This has to do with a business that wants to come to Greenfield and use a building that is currently vacant,” Allis said, adding he doesn’t know yet which business in particular is hoping to come to town. “The building doesn’t fit in the zoning for what they do, so we’re essentially allowing a use within a district that is what this business will be doing.”
He said such amendments are not uncommon, as zoning is a living document that can be changed, and similar requests have been approved in the past.
“It’s able to be changed and should be changed in certain instances where you can really do something somewhere that isn’t going to be a problem and you have an empty building,” he said. “It really makes sense to do it.”
The council will also be asked to approve amendments to the Tree Ordinance, which Allis said are not controversial and are intended to clean up the existing ordinance. Requests to appropriate $50,000 to the Unemployment Trust and $228,000 for one-year retroactive teachers’ contracts will also be voted on during the meeting.
