SHELBURNE FALLS — The state Senate has given Rural Commonwealth a citation recognizing the organization’s “efforts and advocacy on behalf of Massachusetts’ most rural communities.” The citation was offered by Sen. Adam Hinds, D-Pittsfield.
In a letter accompanying the citation, Hinds wrote: “Rural Commonwealth is an important partner for the rural communities of Massachusetts that provides development, communications, and other forms of assistance that these communities otherwise wouldn’t receive.”
He called the agency “a crucial asset to so many of the communities I represent.”
Rural Commonwealth is a statewide nonprofit with a new office in the old Lamson & Goodnow complex, in Shelburne Falls. The organization works on strengthening 170 rural communities in Massachusetts through networking, effective communication of community needs, on-the-ground research, and local problem-solving projects.
SHELBURNE FALLS — Create a mini “Bridge of Flowers” in your own backyard by purchasing perennials grown on the bridge and from other growers at the Bridge of Flowers annual plant sale on Saturday, May 19.
The sale features flowering plants divided from those growing on the bridge, along with plants from other local growers. Specialties include propagated native wildflowers and plants, dahlia bulbs, shade and sun perennials. There will also be herbs, berry bushes, trees and other items.
The sale takes place at the Baptist Lot, a triangular green between Main and Water streets, across from the Shelburne-Buckland Community Center. The sale itself begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon, but coffee and baked goods will be available starting at 8 a.m.
Profits from the sale help to pay for operating costs on the Bridge of Flowers, along with annual donations from Friends of the Bridge of Flowers and from donation boxes on the bridge. The bridge’s gardens has been maintained by the Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club’s Bridge of Flowers Committee since 1929.
Credit cards cannot be accepted, but cash and local checks are accepted for payment. The sale will be held rain or shine.
