HAWLEY — What does a town of only 337 people do to celebrate itself and its heritage? Hold a “Hawley Day,” of course.

This year’s 117th Hawley Day takes place on Sunday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. through the afternoon, hosted by the Sons and Daughters of Hawley historical society.

The day starts with a “Koffee Klatch” at the 1846 Meeting House, at the intersections of East Hawley, Buckland and Plainfield roads. Here you’ll find beverages, pastry and an assortment of Hawley-related gift items and books.

At 11 a.m., there is a traditional memorial service for Hawley Sons and Daughters who died this past year. After an annual business meeting, there is a program of songs, poems, contests and some special presentations.

Lunch is held at the picnic tables outside the Hawley Grove, across the road from the Meeting House. Those attending are to bring a lunch, which will be supplemented by cold salads, drinks and desserts provided by the Sons and Daughters. Musicians and performers Tex and Pat LaMountain will provide live music.

There will also be lawn games and a short ceremony to honor Leo Roy, commissioner of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, who was instrumental in securing money and scheduling work that will finally result in the re-opening of roads running through the Hawley state forests.
