Bernardston launches new notification system

BERNARDSTON — The town has partnered with Regroup to launch a new mass notification system designed to keep the community informed and prepared during critical events. The platform delivers urgent updates through phone calls, text messages, emails and more.

From severe weather and road closures to emergencies and community alerts, the system provides real-time notifications that help safeguard residents and businesses.

“We’re committed to keeping our community safe and informed,” Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Peter Shedd said in a statement. “This system gives us the tools to share critical information instantly, so department heads can share quick info with each other, so the Water Department and Highway Department can keep us updated on road closures, so everyone can take the right steps to protect themselves and their loved ones.”

Shedd encourages all residents to sign up to receive notifications by visiting the Bernardston town website, townofbernardston.org, and clicking on “Regroup Alerts.” With questions, contact Shedd at pshedd@townofbernardston.org or 413-522-8775.

Community Choice Power Supply Program starts in March

LEYDEN — Come March, Leyden will begin offering three energy plans for residents as part of the new Community Choice Power Supply Program, with a public information session scheduled for February.

This municipal aggregation program is available to Leyden residents, and can provide an energy program that is, “stable, affordable and incorporates additional renewable energy,” a notice from the town states.

The Community Choice Power Supply Program allows local governments to combine the purchasing power of its residents and businesses, providing them with a different electricity supply. The three packages offer long-term savings for residents and the town.

“Right now, the savings isn’t substantial at the start, but we’re taking a defensive position by locking in a favorable rate for 32 months,” Selectboard member Katherine DiMatteo said in a statement. “Residents will be able to count on a stable supply rate — regardless [of whether] the market goes up or down which is easier to budget.”

Residents will not notice any change in their electricity service. The only discernible difference will be that First Point Power will be printed under “Supplier Services” on Eversource’s monthly bills starting in April. Residents and small business owners will continue to receive one bill from Eversource and to send payments to Eversource for processing. There will be no interruption in billing, power or customer service.

This is an opt-out program, so residents won’t need to take action to participate in it. Any resident or business on Eversource’s Basic Service will be enrolled automatically, with the option to opt out. The standard package will offer a $4 savings monthly compared to the Eversource rate, and a $2 savings for the Optional Green 10 product.

To help answer any questions residents may have, an information session will be held at the Leyden Town Offices, 7 Brattleboro Road, on Monday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m.

Residents can visit colonialpowergroup.com/leyden or call 866-485-5858, ext. 1 to learn more about the program, to opt in or opt out, or to change product selection.
