Behind 21 points by Tayler Bergeron, the Greenfield girls basketball team cruised past Monson, 60-12, in independent play on Wednesday night.
It was the Green Wave’s (1-1) home opener. Greenfield’s defense pounced on the Mustangs from the very beginning of the game.
“Our defensive pressure started right from the beginning,” Greenfield coach Ben Johnson said. “We were up, we were aggressive. Flying around the court and playing hard defense as a team.”
Bergeron went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and connected on a 3-pointer.
“She was a great leader for us tonight,” Johnson said. “She really set up the offense. Executed what we were trying to look for. It was good to see the ball go in the hoop for her.”
Natalia Cody (10 points) and Ever Kennedy (11 points) both scored in double figures for the Wave. Gloria McDonald added nine points.
Eighth grader Sammy Suhl connected on a bucket for her first varsity points for Greenfield. The Green Wave travel to Smith Academy on Monday at 7 p.m. to open play in the Franklin South league.
Pioneer 40, Turners Falls 13 — Jacobia Tyminski led all scorers with 11 points in the independent win for the Panthers.
Kyler McClelland scored nine points with Deveney Pillsbury adding eight. McClelland added three assists and four steals. Pioneer (1-1) held the Thunder to four points in the second half.
Ivy Lopez had seven points for Turners Falls (0-3).
Boys basketball
Athol 46, Pioneer 20 —The Bears went on the road and secured a Hampshire North win over the Panthers in Northfield.
Athol (1-1, 1-1 Hampshire North) got 14 points from Karim Thompson. Ethan Goodwin added 10 points, with Brody Brockney chipping in with nine points. Matt Richotte scored 11 points for Pioneer (0-3, 0-2 Hampshire North).
Smith Academy 46, Mohawk 33 — The Warriors lost in Hatfield in independent play. Mohawk jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first quarter but couldn’t hold on.
Brayden Marcoux scored seven points for the Warriors. Malcolm Briggs added six points for Mohawk (0-2).
Wrestling
Athol 69, Mohawk 12 — The Bears picked up an independent win over the Warriors in Buckland.
Gabriel Martin won by technical fall (17-0) at 106 pounds over Etta Thompson . Kayden Rodriguez (113) and Adam Rodriguez (120) won by pin. Brady O’Connell won by major decision (10-2) at 144 pounds. Jaiden Santer pinned his opponent in 33 seconds at 190 pounds.
Mohawk’s two victories were by forfeit.

Mahar 53, Smith Academy 28 — The Senators won their second straight in Hatfield. Hayden Comeau and and Nastasia Sanders scored 12 point each in the Franklin South league match up.
Mackenzie Matthews chipped in with seven point for the Senators (2-0, 1-0 FS).
