SPRINGFIELD — Alexander Ciccolo, the Adams man who was allegedly planning to carry out terrorist attacks on behalf of the Islamic State group, has been indicted on federal terrorism charges.

After his arrest almost a year ago, Ciccolo, 23, was briefly held at the Franklin County Jail and House of Corrections, where he allegedly stabbed a nurse in the head with a pen during intake.

He’s been held in a maximum security prison in Rhode Island since his arrest.

Ciccolo was indicted Thursday in U.S. District Court in Springfield on charges of attempting to provision material support to a foreign terrorist organization, attempting to use weapons of mass destruction, illegally possessing firearms, assault with a dangerous weapon causing bodily injury, terroism forfeiture allegation and firearm forfeiture allegation.

Ciccolo is the son of Boston police Capt. Robert Ciccolo, who alerted the FBI after his son said he wanted to join the Islamic State group.

He was arrested following a lengthy investigation by the FBI, which culminated in his arrest after purchasing firearms from a person who was cooperating with the agency. He was barred from owning guns due to a drunk driving conviction.

Ciccolo later told FBI agents that he planned to bomb an unidentified state university outside Massachusetts and broadcast executions of students live on the internet.
