Athol High School’s Kris Selanis and Mohawk Trail Regional High School’s Meghan Davis each represented the area well at the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Selanis finished second in the shot-put competition, while Davis came in fifth in the 2-mile.
Selanis entered the meet as the second seed and matched it with a throw of 54 feet, 9½ inches to place second, behind Jason Montana of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine. Montana won the meet at 55-10. Selanis’ throw was off his seed throw of 56-1¾, which was his winning throw at the MIAA All-State Meet the weekend before, and would have won the New England title.
Davis, meanwhile, had a personal-best time in the 2-mile at 11 minutes, 3.03 seconds to eclipse her previous best time of 11:03.91, which she set at the MIAA Division V meet two weeks ago. Jacqueline Gaughan of Exeter (N.H.) High School won the meet at 10:09.20. The Mohawk junior was the top finisher from the state.
Davis and Selanis qualified for the 2018 New Balance National Indoor Championship Friday at the Armory in New York City.
NMH hoops wins title
Nate Laszewski finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds Sunday evening and Northfield Mount Hermon School won the New England Prep School Athletic Conference boys’ basketball championship with a 68-59 victory over New Hampton School at Rhode Island College in Providence, R.I.
Laszewski was named tournament Most Valuable Player and is believed to be the first two-time NEPSAC MVP after winning the award in 2016, which was also the last time NMH won the league title.
The second-seeded Hoggers also got a big performance on defense from Laszewski, who took four charges and had two blocks. NMH coach John Carroll said that despite Laszewski struggling from long range (he made just 1 of 7 3-point attempts despite being the program’s all-time leading 3-point scorer), contributed in other facets of the game, drawing four charges and also finishing with 2 blocked shots, which was the difference between winning and losing.
“I think his improvement as a basketball player was evident in his stats tonight,” Carroll said of the Notre Dame committ.
Ryan Greer finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for NMH.
“He was a rock all day,” Carroll said.
Kai Toews finished with 12 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals, Noah Kirkwood added 6 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds, and Chuck Hannah had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
NMH (29-3) has now won 14 straight games and will take the winning streak into the National Tournament at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. The Hoggers, who got a first-round bye in the 12-team tournament, begin play Wednesday night at 8 in the quarterfinals against the winner of the first-round game between Hargrave Military Academy of Virginia and SPIRE Academy of Ohio.
• On Saturday, NMH defeated St. Thomas More, 90-67, after rallying from a 40-36 halftime deficit.
