BERNARDSTON — The Selectboard read a report from Police Chief James Palmeri during a Wednesday meeting announcing his department didn’t find any violations while conducting annual alcohol compliance checks.
Palmeri reported Sgt. Jason Bassett and personnel from the Franklin Regional Council of Governments checked licensed establishments in Bernardston on Friday, Aug. 25. Funding came from a FRCOG grant, Palmeri wrote.
BERNARDSTON — The Turners Falls Road bridge replacement project, which was expected to begin this summer, will be postponed until next spring, the Selectboard announced Wednesday.
According to Selectboard Chairman Stanley Garland, the amount of $565,400 was the lowest of seven bids received, a number that’s significantly higher than the $415,607 the state will reimburse through the town’s municipal agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
The reason for the elevated figures, Garland explained, is extra crews would have to be hired to ensure the project was finished before winter.
“If we did it in the spring, we could see substantial cost savings and possibly be in line with the grant,” Garland said, making a motion to deny all bids and postpone the project.
“The recommendation is to bid the job in January, for a no later than May 31 start date,” Town Coordinator Hugh Campbell added.
BERNARDSTON — The Selectboard approved over $15,000 worth of repairs to the Highway Garage during a Wednesday meeting.
The repairs involve the building’s inner stonework, which is crumbling in places according to Highway Superintendent Gary Wetherby, and replacing overhead doors. The Selectboard voted to finance the project using the town’s building maintenance account, which Town Coordinator Hugh Campbell reported currently contains just shy of $27,000.
BERNARDSTON — Cushman Library encourages residents to donate books, audiobooks and DVDs for a book and bake sale, to be held Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Town Hall.
All proceeds from the event will be used to purchase new circulating materials for Cushman Library, according to a library press release.
Donated items should be mildew and odor-free, not written in and have intact covers. Dictionaries, encyclopedias and textbooks will not be accepted, the release states.
Donations can be dropped off at Town Hall on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 5 to 6 p.m.; on Friday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; or by arrangement by contacting the library at cushmanlibrary@gmail.com or at 413-648-5402.
