BOSTON — Days after her opponent called for suspension of the gas tax, Gov. Maura Healey proposed a two-month gas tax holiday on Tuesday, saying she’ll put election season legislation before lawmakers to accomplish her goal. 

Healey will file the proposal in a supplemental budget, according to her office. House Speaker Ron Mariano on Monday called suspending the gas tax “fiscally irresponsible” because, he said, there is “no end to the war in sight,” referring to the war with Iran that began over the winter and has led to significantly higher gas and other prices. 

“This will offer some relief to people, for Massachusetts families driving to work and school every day, to our drivers and truckers out on the road, to our Uber and Lyft folks,” Healey said at a press conference on Tuesday. 

The governor blamed President Donald Trump for rising gas prices, citing the U.S. war with Iran. 

“The price of gas has gone up 50% since this war, and we are paying for it every single day. People in America need relief, and as governor, I want to do what I can to give relief to people here in Massachusetts,” she said. 

Republican candidate for governor Mike Minogue last week launched an ad where he said he would suspend the gas tax “until prices stabilize.” 

Minogue’s ad said, “Massachusetts charges the gas tax whether you’re paying two bucks a gallon or five, whether you’re driving a semi or taking the kids to school. That’s why I’m proposing a gas tax holiday until prices stabilize. Maura Healey ignores the question. That doesn’t make Massachusetts more affordable, but families and working people in Massachusetts need relief now.”

Minogue’s campaign spokesperson Elizabeth Hopkins told State House News Service that he envisions a gas tax holiday that would be triggered any time prices go above $4 per gallon and last “until prices drop back down.” Hopkins said Minogue would “also work to permanently eliminate the gas tax,” and anticipates “this money would be replaced following an audit of the budget. Mike anticipates finding hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars currently funding waste and fraud.”

The details of Healey’s planned gas tax holiday were not available after her press conference.
