Greenfield Community Band to perform final concert of summer season

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Community Band will perform its final concert of the season at Energy Park on Miles Street on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. The concert is free.

The final summer concert will feature a “Fun in the Summer” theme. Selections include “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing” by Duke Ellington, “Captain America March,” “I Will Survive” and “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” among others.

Concerts are weather permitting. Check the Greenfield Community Band Facebook page or the Greenfield Recreation Department website for cancellation information. New members are always welcome.

Funeral procession planned for Capt. Whitney

GREENFIELD — The Fire Department will honor Capt. John Whitney with a uniformed funeral procession on Sunday, Aug. 2. Whitney died on July 22 from brain cancer.

The procession will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Greenfield Fire Station, 41 Main St., and will proceed along Main Street, concluding at Court Square, where funeral services will be held at the Second Congregational Church. Members of the public are encouraged to line Main Street along the procession route to honor Whitney, and show support for his family and the firefighting community.

Numerous fire departments, law enforcement agencies, honor guards and city officials are expected to line Court Square.

The following street closures will be in effect:

  • Main Street will be closed to traffic from 1:30 p.m. to about 2 p.m. during the procession.
  • Court Square will be closed to traffic from noon to 6 p.m. to accommodate funeral services and ceremonial activities.

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes and allow additional travel time.

Library program to shine light on farmworkers

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Public Library will present a podcast titled “Room to Grow: The Inner Lives of Farm Workers in the United States in an Age of Turmoil” on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m.

“Room to Grow” gives voice to the realities and goals of international farmworkers making their home in Massachusetts.
