July 26: Rustic Ridge celebrating 125th anniversary
NORTHFIELD — Rustic Ridge, a community of cottagers, is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founding with a celebration on Sunday, July 26, at 3 p.m. at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 147 Main St.
According to Rustic Ridge’s former President Margaret Conner, the group largely consists of descendants of the ministers and missionaries who traveled to Northfield to see evangelist Dwight L. Moody 125 years ago and established the community of cottages. Every summer, the Rustic Ridge members migrate from their homes in cities across the country to stay at the cottages in Northfield, “the home of their heart” for the season, as Conner described.
“People come even all these years later to see their lifelong friends again,” Conner explained. “It’s a very special community.”
At the free anniversary event, attendees will watch a video presentation about Northfield’s history before sharing memories and stories of their time in town.
Library to host drop-in mending workshop
NORTHFIELD — Staff from The Stash House in Turners Falls will hold a drop-in mending workshop at Dickinson Memorial Library on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m., giving attendees an opportunity to save beloved clothing or textiles by learning to mend it themselves with professional help.
No experience is necessary. Attendees can bring one to three items of clothing or other textiles that need repairs. No sign-up is required.
This free program is supported in part by a grant from the Northfield Cultural Council.
Next puzzle swap set for Aug. 1
NORTHFIELD — The next puzzle swap at Dickinson Memorial Library will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Visitors are advised to park behind the library and come in through the side door, then turn left to find the Community Room containing the puzzles.

NMH teacher giving book-inspired talk
NORTHFIELD — Northfield Mount Hermon School teacher Pete Masteller returns to Dickinson Memorial Library on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m. for another book-inspired talk, this one using Dover Publications’ “Essays on Civil Disobedience” as a jumping off point.
Attendees will consider not just Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., but also a contemporary Russian punk band. The program is free to attend.
