HEATH — A motorcycle crash on Route 8A resulted in the death of a 70-year-old Wilmington, Vermont, man on Friday afternoon.

According to First Assistant District Attorney Steven Gagne, a passing driver saw an overturned three-wheeled motorcycle on Route 8A at around noon on Friday, rendered first aid to the motorcyclist and called 911. Gagne stated the victim was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he later died.

At this time, Gagne said there is no indication that any other vehicles were involved in the crash, which took place at a sharp corner near the intersection with Long Hill Road. The official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police troopers working out of the Shelburne Falls barracks and the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s office, according to Gagne.

According to the Friends of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dog Shelter’s Facebook page, the motorcyclist had a dog named Louie with him. A black poodle mix, he was wearing a helmet and a vest harness, and survived the crash.

As of Sunday, Louie had been captured.

“Thank you to the family and residents of Heath for your help,” the dog shelter wrote.
