NORTHFIELD — According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the driver who was killed in a crash on Gulf Road in Northfield on Thursday is believed to be Duane Schillemat, 65, of Munsonville, New Hampshire.

The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the area of 585 Gulf Road, where Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III said a Ford F-350 pickup truck went off the road and struck a tree. The Northfield Fire and Police departments, as well as Northfield EMS, responded to find the cab of the truck fully engulfed in flames and the driver still inside.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, which was traveling southeast on Gulf Road at the time of the crash, according to the DA’s office. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and confirm the identity of the deceased.

The matter remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, along with members of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Northfield Police and Fire departments.
