The decorated athletic career of Mohawk Trail Regional’s Addie Loomis reached a monumental bookend on May 29. Loomis collected one more accolade before crossing the stage and graduating from the Mohawk Trail Class of 2026: The “Iron Mike” Award.
During the ceremony, there was another unexpected surprise. The “Iron Mike” Award’s first recipient was in 1981.
“It is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a graduating Mohawk Trail student athlete. It was created to recognize the absolute pinnacle of excellence when it comes to athletic and scholastic leadership. In our district’s nearly 60 years of existence, it has only been awarded five times,” Athletic Director Greg Lilly said during the graduation ceremony. “I could sit up here for an hour and list off all of Addie’s awards, accolades and accomplishments, but knowing the humble nature of her character, that’s probably the last thing she would want.”
Lilly said they would add Loomis’ name to the case in the hallway. Usually there would be a certificate to signify the award. The Mohawk Trail athletics department wanted to do something different, presenting her with the number one bib from the MIAA State Ski Championship.
“The tradition goes, the top skier in the state gets to wear the bib for just one day, make their two runs, and then they have to give back the bib,” Lilly said. “The funny thing is, unbeknownst to Addie, we decided that we didn’t want to give it back. So, in recognition of becoming the sixth recipient of the Iron Mike Award, it is my great honor to return this bib to its rightful and deserving owner.”
Loomis pondered how her athletic director managed to get a hold of the bib.
“I was really surprised that Greg (Lilly) had the bib from states,” Loomis said. “When he presented the award, I was honored to get that, but I was focused and confused around how he got the bib.”
Loomis took home the giant slalom state championship at Wachusett Mountain on Feb. 25 in Princeton. Loomis had the best combined time in both the slalom and the giant slalom (1:46.50). A family member might have asked for the bib, according to Loomis.
Former recipients of the award include Kara Rillings (1981), Adam Hinds (1994), Megan Duncan-Smith (1997) and Helen Dole (2000). The most recent recipient was Meghan Davis, who graduated in 2019. Davis was an elite distance runner for the Warriors.
The award etched Loomis’ name in Mohawk sports lore, permanently. Kids in the hallway at Mohawk will see her name years from now.
“Excited is not the word for it,” Loomis said. “More satisfied, by all the hard work I have put in. Especially in skiing. It will leave a mark there and hopefully a mark on other people.”
Loomis plans to attend the University of Utah in the fall.
