Montague Parks and Recreation, Police departments holding information sessions
TURNERS FALLS — Montague Parks & Recreation Director Jon Dobosz and Montague Police Chief Jason Haskins will be at the Turners Falls branch of Greenfield Savings Bank, 282 Avenue A, for back-to-back weekend programs, with Dobosz on Saturday, May 30, and Haskins on Saturday, June 6, respectively.
Both programs will run from 1 to 2 p.m. Dobosz will talk about summer programs and events happening in Montague, and Haskins will discuss community policing initiatives at the department while getting to know members of the community.
Both programs are free. Light snacks and beverages will be provided by the bank.
May 28: ‘Historical Women: Amelia Earhart’
ERVING — Sheryl Faye will present “Historical Women: Amelia Earhart” on Thursday, May 28, at 6 p.m. at the Erving Senior & Community Center, 1 Care Drive.
The free event is co-hosted by the Erving Public Library, the Friends of the Erving Public Library, and the Senior & Community Center. It is funded by a grant from the New Salem Academy. No registration is necessary.
Puzzle Race set for Sunday
ERVING — The Erving Public Library, 2 Care Drive, will host a Puzzle Race on Sunday, May 31, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Participants will race to see which team can finish a 500-piece puzzle in two hours. Sign-up is required by calling 413-423-3348. Competitors can sign up with a team of two to four members or request to be assigned to a team.
‘Pennies from Heaven’ fundraiser underway
GILL — As part of a “Pennies from Heaven” fundraiser that continues through May 30, for each gallon of gas that is purchased at The Mill, a penny will be donated to a local Relay for Life team. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
19th annual Family Fishing Day planned at Barton Cove and Discovery Center
The state Department of Conservation and Recreation will host its 19th annual Family Fishing Day on Saturday, June 6, with fishing activities available at Barton Cove in Gill and at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A in Turners Falls, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At Barton Cove on Barton Cove Road in Gill, families can enjoy free, license-free fishing. People are encouraged to bring their own gear as supplies provided by DCR will be limited.
At the Discovery Center, a shuttle will commute to Barton Cove every half hour, or as needed. Inside the Discovery Center, there will be fly-tying demonstrations, a fish from the USGS Conte Anadromous Fish Research Lab and fish print-making, called Gyotaku.
These activities are free. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
June 11: Learn about scam protection
ERVING — Anita Wilson of the Consumer Protection Unit at the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and Michelle Ozdarski from Greenfield Savings Bank will be at the Erving Senior & Community Center, 1 Care Drive, on Thursday, June 11, at 1 p.m. for a free presentation on how to spot and avoid scams.

Lee Evers to speak at Senior Center
ERVING — Join 103-year-old World War II veteran and author Lee Evers on Tuesday, June 16, at 1 p.m. at the Erving Senior & Community Center, 1 Care Drive, to learn about his experience serving in the war.
