TURNERS FALLS — JaDuke Theater will bring Dr. Seuss’ beloved world to life on stage when it hosts performances of “Seussical the Musical” this weekend.
Performances are scheduled for Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, at 7 p.m., as well as Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m.
Nick Waynelovich is directing the production while his son, John Waynelovich, takes on the role of Horton the Elephant. According to JaDuke Theater, an adult cast handles the lead roles while young performers step into various supporting roles, resulting in a multi-generational collaboration.
“It’s been a special experience to work alongside my son on this show,” the elder Waynelovich said in a statement. “At the same time, the strength of this production comes from the entire ensemble. This group of performers has created something vibrant, thoughtful and full of life.”
“Seussical the Musical” blends the whimsical stories of Dr. Seuss into one colorful, music-filled tale, while also exhibiting the central message that one small person (or elephant) can make a big difference through kindness, loyalty and belief in what others cannot see.
“Seussical the Musical” follows Horton the Elephant as he discovers a tiny speck of dust containing the Whos of Whoville. Despite skepticism from those around him, Horton protects the Whos, proving that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” Along the way, he joins forces with the mischievous Cat in the Hat, the adventurous Jojo and a host of other colorful Seuss characters. The musical features songs like “Horton Hears a Who,” “It’s Possible” and “Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!”
“At JaDuke Theater, our goal is always to produce work at a professional level while remaining deeply rooted in our community,” Producer Kimberly Williams said in a statement. “’Seussical’ is a perfect example of that — high-quality storytelling, strong artistic leadership and performers of all ages coming together to create something meaningful.”
Tickets can be purchased at jaduketheater.com or at the door. Tickets cost $15 for adults, and $12 for children ages 12 and under and senior citizens ages 65 and up.
