After building a big early lead, the Pioneer Valley Regional girls basketball team held off Mohawk Trail in a 50-42 win in Buckland on Monday.
A floater in the paint by Kyler McClelland gave the Panthers (5-3, 3-2 Franklin South) a 47-42 lead with two minutes to play in the game. Pioneer went 3-for-4 from the line down the stretch to help close out the Franklin South contest.
Deveney Pillsbury calmly went 2-for-2 from the line with 26 seconds left for Pioneer.
Maggie Tsipenyuk led the Panthers with 16 points and eight rebounds. McClelland dropped 13 points for Pioneer. Emmalee Inman and Sadie Wilcox dominated the paint on the offensive end for the Warriors (3-4, 1-3). Inman finished with 17 points while Wilcox added 14 points for Mohawk.

After the first quarter, the Panthers had a 18-6 lead. Consecutive 3-pointers from Natalie Lanoue and Zephyr Jetzon cut Pioneer’s lead down to 19-13 in the second quarter. After a couple finishes in the paint by Wilcox, the Warriors tied the game. Lanoue and Jetzon both had eight points for Mohawk.
Jaelyn Boliski nailed a huge 3-pointer toward the end of the third quarter for the Panthers. The shot gave Pioneer a 40-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. Kiara Gruszkowski added eight points for Pioneer.
Mahar 38, Greenfield 33 — The Senators avoided losing a third straight loss with a win over the Green Wave at Nichols gymnasium in Franklin South competition. Mahar (6-2, 4-1 Franklin South) got 13 points from Hayden Comeau and 10 points from Taylor Paluk.
A 13-5 second quarter helped the Senators pull away. Tayler Bergeron led the Green Wave with 18 points. Gloria McDonald added 12 points for Greenfield (4-5, 3-2 Franklin South).
Pathfinder 40, Athol 38 (OT) — In a close one at Mallet gymnasium, Pathfinder outlasted the Bears in Tri-County North play.
Abigayle Spooner scored nine points for Athol (2-8, 2-3 Tri-County North). Mady Hermes added eight points and knocked down a 3-pointer in overtime. Maliah Clark scored seven points with Madeline Desrosiers chipping in with six points for Athol.
Smith Academy 40, Franklin Tech 31 — Abigail Dobias scored nine points, but the Eagles lost in Hatfield in Franklin South competition.
Samantha Duncan added six points, four steals and 10 rebounds for Franklin Tech (3-7, 1-5). Lindsey Taylor worked the glass for nine rebounds.
Frontier 70, Hoosac Valley 41 — The Redhawks cruised past the Hurricanes at Goodnow gymnasium in Suburban league play.
Addie Harrington dropped 20 points with six assists, four blocks and three rebounds. Whitney Campbell scored 14 points with six rebounds and six assists. Skyler Steele scored 20 points for Frontier.
Harper Modestow had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists for Frontier. (8-1, 6-0 Suburban).
Boys basketball
Four Rivers 48, White Oak 19 — The Otters picked up a road win on Monday night. Miles Retzlaff scored 15 points for Four Rivers. Henry Schwerin added 10 points.
Four Rivers 41, The Putney School 30 — On Jan. 8, the Otters got 13 points from Schwerin in the victory over The Putney School. Russell Herbert and Kolin Broderick scored nine and eight points, respectively.

At the Springfield Central Lady Eagle tournament over the weekend, Jocelyn Antes took second place at 126 pounds after losing a 7-4 decision to Solimary Cruz-Sudan in the championship match. Antes won by fall in 13 seconds in the quarterfinals before another win by fall (1:40) in the semifinals. After the weekend, Antes stands at 92 career wins.
For Mohawk Trail, Sara Tatro (235), Evanna Addison (185), Aden Godroy (145) could not get past the semifinals of the consolation rounds for a chance at third place.
Holyoke 64, Frontier 18 — Jocelyn Antes won by fall at 126 pounds in a road loss to the Purple Knights. Konnor James (157 pounds) and Jacoby Merrill (165 pounds) also picked up wins.
Frontier 42, Agawam 30 — The Redhawks clipped the Brownies. Antes won by fall (1:17) over Ayoob Kargab at 120 pounds. James (157), Jack Phillips (175), Casey Bestler (175) and Sean Eich-Richardson (215) also won for Frontier.
Frontier 42, Simsbury 36 — Connor McCoy (106), Antes (126), James (157), Merrill (165), Phillips (175), and Casey Brewster (215) all had victories in the win over Simbsury.
