Ed Comeau to lead nature photography workshop

NORTHFIELD — Whether you are using a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, a free one-hour nature photography workshop at The Brewery at Four Star Farms aims to help you get more out of your camera and improve your photos.

The workshop, to be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the 508 Pine Meadow Road brewery, will be led by nature photographer Ed Comeau. Comeau will discuss core photography concepts that include composition, lighting, framing and depth of field. The workshop is designed for beginners and casual photographers, and focuses on techniques that apply across all types of cameras and devices.

Comeau’s photography centers on landscapes and wildlife of the Quabbin Reservoir region, as well as images from Maine, Alaska and other locations. His work is being exhibited at The Brewery at Four Star Farms through Jan. 7, at Greenfield’s Baystate Franklin Medical Center through Jan. 31, and on rotating display at Atkins Farms Country Market in Amherst. The workshop is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Biologist to discuss ‘Giant Wasps of Franklin County’

NORTHFIELD — Dickinson Memorial Library will host a program, “Giant Wasps of Franklin County,” with local biologist Paul Sievert on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m.

Franklin County is home to some of North America’s largest wasps, such as cicada killer wasps and giant ichneumons. These behemoths of the wasp world play a key role in food webs by controlling insect populations and serving as prey for insectivorous birds. Attendees will see photos from Gill and Montague, and learn from Sievert, who previously delivered a presentation at the library about albatrosses.

The event is co-sponsored by the library and the Northfield Bird Club.

My Art Company to present watercolor painting workshops

BERNARDSTON — My Art Company will present a pair of watercolor painting workshops on Tuesdays, Jan. 13 and Jan. 20, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The workshops will get attendees started with an understanding of the materials used in watercolor painting and painting techniques, in particular how to use washes. Attendees will engage in quick studies in flat, graded and variegated washes.

Participants should bring brushes and a palette if they own one, as well as a kit for watercolor journaling if they have one.

Space is limited to 10 and early sign-up is advised. (Sign up for only one workshop.)
There is a suggested $5 donation.

Jan. 14: ‘AI for Seniors’

BERNARDSTON — Digital Navigator Rich Vaden will present “AI for Seniors” at the Bernardston Senior Center on Wednesday, Jan.14, at 12:30 p.m.

Vaden will help explain what artificial intelligence is, how it works and how it can be used. Attendees are asked to register in advance by calling 413-648-5413.

Consumer Protection Unit director to speak at Senior Center

NORTHFIELD — Anita Wilson, director of the Consumer Protection Unit at the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, will speak at the Northfield Senior Center on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 10:30 a.m.

Learn about the Hoosac Tunnel in Senior Center talk

BERNARDSTON — The Men’s Group at the Bernardston Senior Center will host a presentation on the Hoosac Tunnel on Friday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m.

Carl Byron, author of “A Pinprick of Light: The Troy & Greenfield Railroad and its Hoosac Tunnel,” will be the presenter.

Senior Center to host photo, art reception

BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Senior Center will host “The Art of Not Aging” photo and art reception on Monday, Jan. 26.

The program will feature music by Ron Smith’s NMH Honors Jazz Combo at 3 p.m., followed by a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Wine will be served for attendees ages 21 and older, and other beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be available.

Happy Feet walkers heading to GCC

NORTHFIELD — Participants in the Northfield Senior Center’s Happy Feet walking group will meet at Greenfield Community College for a walk on Monday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m.

Attendees are advised to park near the college’s main entrance. Severe weather — ice, sleet, heavy active snow or extremely cold temperatures with wind chill — will cancel the
walks. Dogs are welcome.

Next Memory Cafe set for Jan. 28

NORTHFIELD — The Northfield Senior Center’s next monthly Memory Cafe, which has room for new participants, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Live music will be provided Tori Stowell and Alyson Galipeau.

This program provides support and socialization for adults dealing with memory-related issues and their caregivers. A light lunch will be provided.
